Menka Soni is a Redmond, WA based fashion designer, and the creator of luxury product label; Ravishing Marketplace. Menka’s work is vibrant and flawlessly detailed, reflecting the elegance and showmanship found in the couture of India, her home country.
Recently, we had the opportunity to interview Menka as she prepares to present at Chance Fashion’s 2017 Menswear Show.
“I support other women designers, and help promote them as part of my Ravishing Marketplace concept: “Helping women transform their dreams into reality.”
CF: How long have you been designing?
MS: I’ve always had a passion for designing and used to design my own outfits, but I only started taking it as a serious profession 5 years back when I started my clothing line; Ravishing Fashion. From the IT Corporate world to fashion designing is a great change, and I am enjoying every bit of it, and I am able to utilize my corporate experience to build & strengthen my brand.
CF: Is designing your full time career?
MS: Yes & No. I would say both, as I am also involved in lot of other activities outside of designing. I am Washington & Oregon State Director for Miss, Mrs, and Miss Teen India pageant, and I am President of Ravishing Women: a non-profit helping to promote women talent & entrepreneurs. I am also launching Pageant & Leadership Academy and introducing Miss Asia Washington in 2017.
CF: Ravishing Marketplace products range from shoes and high fashion to accessories and home decor; is it difficult to remain current on such a diverse list of merchandise?
MS: Most of our lines are meant to compliment our main-stream designer clothing for Men & Women, and provide a one-stop-shop experience for all our clients. We work as stylists & fashion consultants and help them coordinate with matching jewelry, purses, & other accessories.
CF: Is Ravishing Marketplace a solo project or do you have a design team?
MS: I support other women designers, and help promote them as part of my Ravishing Marketplace concept: “Helping women transform their dreams into reality.” So I do collaborate with other designers, however, for my Ravishing Clothing line, I am the lead and solo designer.
CF: What is the concept behind your brand?
MS: Being Indian, my ideas and concepts are mostly influenced by extravagant and traditional Indian clothing; meaning dramatic and creative patterns, and a variety of fabric and vibrant colors.
CF: What are your creative influences?
MS: Working on designs that are a good blend of eccentric combinations of Indian patterns and embroideries, and influences from western style. We call it Indo-Western.
CF: How do you market and advertise for your brand?
MS: Through various social medias, print medias, fashion shows, and fashion networking events.
CF: How did you first hear of Chance Fashion, and why did you choose Chance to help present Ravishing Marketplace?
MS: I am actively engaged in various fashion shows and photoshoots, and came to know about Chance from our models. Working with Change Fashion has been a fantastic experience so far, as they are always providing opportunities for designers, models, HMUA, and Photographers. In my 2 year journey with Chance I received 5 Collaborative Designer of the Month Awards, and 1 Ambassador to Chance Award, by spreading awareness in different demographics. Through participating in Chance Fashion, we were able to promote our brand and gain visibility.
CF: You’ll be presenting at Chance Fashion’s 2017 Menswear Show on March 11th, what is the name of the collection you will be showcasing?
MS: We are showcasing Men’s Long Shirts with an Indian Twist
CF: What’s next for you and your brand, any upcoming projects?
MS: Working on a newer concept of Positive Clothing which is focussed on capturing various positive energies via process, fabric, texture & color. It is a very interesting project.
